Profile: Bill Falcus

Bill was born in Enumclaw, Washington, a small farming community south-east of Seattle.  He was attracted to the sound of the pipes after hearing the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada play at a local parade and he decided to learn to play.  Bill had emigrated to Canada in 1951 with his father, William, a WWI Canadian veteran (Vimy Ridge and The Somme.  Bill took his initial instruction from P/M Donald MacLeod of the Queen’s Own Highlanders of Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Bill then competed in the local highland games in the novice and amateur events.  He has played in numerous pipe bands over the years. When he attended the University of Washington he played with the Seattle Pipe Band until he returned to Victoria, B.C., where he played with the Canadian Scottish Regiment under P/M Frank Knight.  After a short hiatus, he returned to the band scene in the 1970s and played with the Vancouver City Police Pipe Band under P/M Andy Perrie and P/M Ian Sinclair.  While in this band Bill was awarded the Lesle Harbord Perpetual Trophy in 1985, 1986 and ’87 and was named Bandsman of the Year in 1983.  In the years following he played with the Delta Police Pipe Band under P/M Bruce Topp and the Highland Gentlemen Shrine Pipe Band under P/M Bill Baird.

Bill joined the RCMP E Division Pipe Band in June, 2006 and is enjoying the members’ enthusiasm, the band’s leadership and organization.  He is also an associate piper with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada under P/M Mike Bain.

Bill has been a professional accredited real estate appraiser for the last 45 years and owns his own company, Falcus Appraisals Inc.  He is also the proud owner of an award- winning 1967 Mustang convertible and enjoys fishing for trophy salmon in the Queen Charlotte Islands with his wife, Mary.  Bill enjoys the fishing but Mary is the undisputed winner of their salmon derbies!

Bill retired from the band at the end of the 2007-2008 season.
